National Freight & Supply Chain Strategy International Benchmarking

International Benchmarking is a key action under the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy, and provides opportunities to compare and analyse performance for new insights to improve operations. International benchmarking assessments at sectoral and commodity levels, and the Supply Chain Benchmarking Dashboard are now available.

The Dashboard evaluates Australia's supply chain transport and logistics performance through comprehensive data, modelling, and analysis. It leverages the Department's longstanding investment in the CSIRO's Transport Network Strategic Investment Tool (TraNSIT) to establish freight performance benchmarks and indicators for Australia's key import and export supply chains against international competitors.

This project addresses enduring questions 1-9.

Outcomes

This project integrates freight and supply chain performance information across regions and against international benchmarks. This need was highlighted in the industry-led Inquiry into National Freight and Supply Chain Priorities (2017), which recommended benchmarking key supply chain performance against international competitors as a priority action. The project will help evaluate Australia's supply chain transport and logistics performance. It uses comprehensive modelling and analysis to provide a shared evidence base to industry, research, community, and public sector stakeholders.

Sustained delivery of this information will help support:

  • informed strategic policy and planning, investment and regulation
  • understanding of Australia's efficiency and international competitiveness
  • collaboration on priorities, challenges or key areas of interest, using benchmarking as a foundation for informed exploration.

Comparing the movement of commodities domestically and internationally helps to identify areas for potential improvement or investment, to support Australia's competitiveness and resilience.

Initial planned outputs

  1. Supply Chain Benchmarking Dashboard - a prototype benchmarking dashboard, providing interactive capability and a range of benchmarking measures across 150+ supply chains.
  2. Enhancements on prototype benchmark dashboard - include the addition of more commodities of interest, backloading, as well as numerous user experience capability enhancements.
  3. Commodity-level Reports - a suite of research reports on individual commodities of interest, utilising the benchmarking capabilities to draw comparative statics and conclusions on efficiencies.
  4. Review/Engagements - implementation of stakeholder workshops to facilitate their engagement on all products to support further developments and put actionable insights to effect. Additionally, the project could create opportunities for international cooperation.

Comparing the movement of commodities domestically and internationally helps to identify areas for potential improvement or investment, to support Australia's competitiveness and resilience.
