Freight Consignment Data Exchange

This project promotes increased information sharing between freight and logistics operators to improve supply chain resilience and performance. Pilot studies have found that manufacturers, freight operators and retailers share and record very little consignment (freight package) information. This can be inefficient and lead to blind spots in the system. The first phase of this project focuses on building a deeper understanding of current industry systems and practices used to manage freight consignment information as well as establishing a more complete picture of related initiatives and their associated focus areas and scope.

In the future, strategic decision-making and planning processes can benefit from increased and standardised data exchange by receiving feeds of historic consignment data to understand the movement of goods across supply chains.

This project addresses enduring questions 1-4 and 7.

Outcomes

Improved visibility of freight consignment data can potentially improve supply predictability, efficiency, and productivity, reduce the need to keep inventory, help identify bottlenecks, improve response times to unanticipated events, and reduce fatigue and error.

A more complete picture of freight movements to help inform infrastructure investment decision-making, freight demand forecasting, and policy development.

Initial Planned Outputs

A more complete picture of freight movements to help inform infrastructure investment decision-making, freight demand forecasting, and policy development.

Data exchange and analysis pilots with industry to: a) demonstrate the value of exchanging freight consignment data to stakeholders, b) prove the feasibility of exchanging and aggregating real freight consignment data, and c) explore and validate design options for the more technical (system and methodology) aspects of the data exchange process.

A linkages report to detail related initiatives and articulate their relevance to the Hub and this project. Following the findings from the linkages report, the project plan will be revised to articulate the next steps for the project to support the exchange of freight data across industry.
